These 12 Back to school dress looks my teens are buying could have come straight from my high school wardrobe
Parents / Francesca Fasciglione

Back to school dress shopping of course. While Lisa Frank folders that I could stuff into my brand new backpack used to make my heart sing, these days my teenagers dream more about fashion than school supplies.
I’m no expert on teen trends, although from what I can tell they look suspiciously similar to what was popular in my day. My own teenagers were more than happy to show off some of the looks they plan to wear this back to school season. With a classic babydoll tee, cardigan or cargo pants that can seem like a throwback to the past, find trendy (yet practical and affordable!) items here , Nordstrom, Old Navy, Target, American Eagle and Kohl’s.
Billabong Ride In Cotton Blend Graphic Sweatshirt
Graphic cotton blend sweatshirt
My 16 year old daughter chose this Billabong graphic crew neck sweater for the first time. I admit that at first I wondered if the logo meant something inappropriate in everyday terms, but I quickly realized that it was simply a trademark. So do what you will, dear uncool parents, but I have to say that the t-shirt seems like a nice tribute to the end of summer with its dull, sunny colors. Plus, the cotton blend looks super comfortable. The sweater comes and customers report a slightly oversized fit, which everyone knows is crucial with a round neck.
Arabess fleece sweatshirt with round neck

Another sweatshirt option . My daughters said this looked cozy and comfortable and they liked that it came in 25 different colors. (They’d rather buy two of everything and swap/argue about their clothes.) This shirt is made of polyester and viscose, so it feels smoother and more stretchy than cotton versions. It is also and is designed to fit loosely.
Wihnsinop cardigan
Y2K cardigan sweater
This lovely pick comes from my 14 year old daughter who told me there is a bit of a hippie vibe going on right now. And honestly, as a mom, I choose this style over the endless crop top options that also seem to exist. This cardigan is 15 different colors. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that the shirt should only be hand washed. So keep that in mind on laundry day.

TopYoga’s Crossover Flare Leggings

If you’re millennials or older, you may need to brace yourself, but I’m here to tell you that flared yoga pants are back. (R.I.P. to my PINK yoga pants that have literally been by my side for decades.) Both of my teenagers asked me for flared leggings and they chose this simple . The stretch is made from a mixture of elastane and nylon and the high crossed waistband provides better comfort.
Fitted top with smock in Old Navy
Fitted, smocked linen
Another choice that gives off an end of summer vibe, this Old Navy tank top can be worn alone or layered with a sweater, jacket or hoodie. My daughters Back to school dress love the details of this tank top, the wide straps that make it easy to wear and the different color options (red, floral, black and white). In addition,
Rip Curl Solstice Crop Graphic T-Shirt
Solstice crop graphic t-shirt
A nod to summer, this crop t-shirt from Rip Curl proudly celebrates the summer solstice. (Which, by the way, is already over and unfortunately means our days are only getting shorter.) The t-shirt is faded black or burnt orange , with a few in each color. The shirts are 100% cotton, so line drying is recommended.
MakeMeChic Ribbed Knit Crop Top
4-pack of short-sleeve salad edge ribbed knit t-shirts and crop tops
As a mother of four daughters, I’m a big fan of multipacks because all the clothes go back and forth in my house. And when my daughters find clothes they like, it feels like a win to buy them in several colors that they can all wear. That’s why I was so happy that my girls chose these four-pack t-shirts to make my life easier. They can be easily combined and with nine different color combinations.

Billabong Free Fall jeans with wide legs and frayed hem
Free-fall jeans with frayed hem, stretch and wide leg
Here we see the resurgence of the Billabong brand, and my 14-year-old assures me that if she could have a new pair of jeans this fall, these would be it. She loves the frayed detail at the hem, the high waist and the wide legs. You will need to know your teen’s waist measurement to purchase these as they come

Shrug sweaters are back, and these Target options in light gray or black are comfortable and promise cool fall mornings but are easy to pull off when the afternoon sun shines. The fabric is a lightweight blend of nylon, viscose and polyester that should not be tumble dried.

The 21st century called and they want to offer their cargo pants to today’s youth. My 14 year old daughter passed out when she saw this while I instantly had Boy Meets World flashbacks. They are in any case very much in demand before the start of Back to school . They come in six different colors including pink, white, brown and olive green and are made from 98% Tencel fabric with spandex for a comfortable and stretchy fit. The reviews even say that the waist can feel a little loose. So keep that in mind when ordering. And of course, these pants have lots of pockets: four regular pockets and two cargo pockets, to be exact.
