There’s no denying that the best Naked dresses
are eternally powerful. It is a garment that has attracted attention and made history for centuries. The dress itself comes in many different designs, but the overall concept is simple: revealing without completely revealing, whether in sheer fabrics, cutouts or elegant creations.
And for whatever reason, it’s everywhere in new, surreal forms for spring and fall 2022. Labels like Puppets and Puppets, Schiaparelli, Sinead Gorey and Y/Project are all experimenting with the concept,
be it gilded sculpted breasts, thermal body prints or… trompe l’oeil nipples.
Olivia Rodrigo even exemplified the new trend in her custom Vivienne Westwood dress she wore to the Grammys, featuring a pink glittery airbrushed body contour on her sculptural black dress.

“When I launched the whole concept, so many people were really excited before it even hit the runway,” says Glenn Martens of his Fall 2022 creations for Y/Project, inspired by a classic archive print by Jean Paul Gaultier.

“Because there was this kind of nudity, maybe some markets would ban it or something.” If I put a man’s chest bare on the catwalk, no one talks about it. If it’s breasts.” “It’s like the whole drama,” adds Martens.

Martens’ dresses will no doubt make their own celebrity appearance, as the nudist’s roots lean heavily towards stardom, from old Hollywood to Cher, Rihanna and Rose McGowan’s unforgettable red carpet moments.
But according to fashion historian Michelle Tolini Finamore, its origins date back to the silent film era. ” that often revealed more than they hid,” she explains. “And Cecil B. DeMille was famous for his ‘bathtub’ scenes and flamboyant spectacles like 1919’s ‘Male and Female’ with Gloria Swanson in ‘barely there’ clothes.”
Flash forward to the 1950s and beyond, and the world was greeted with a great icon and arbiter of the Naked dresses: Marilyn Monroe. She often wore sheer dresses full of rhinestones and pearls by designer Jean Louis, which she called “illusion dresses”.
The most famous occasion, of course, was when she wore one during her birthday serenade for John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in 1962. Monroe has always been a trendsetter and an inspiration to her peers.
“Marlene Dietrich was so impressed with Marilyn’s dress that she had Jean Louis make a copy for her cabaret performances,” adds Finamore.

Maybe the dress has always been a symbol of power,
but in the 90s it really felt like women started to claim that idea as their own. Rose McGowan wore her back-baring G-string black gown to the 1998 VMAs. She later wrote in her memoir Brave that wearing it was “a reclaiming of my own body after my attack.” Various nudist camps also began to form elsewhere at this time.

Cool grunge-style pants worn by Courtney Love and minimalist, tight Naked dresses Calvin Klein and Tom Ford for Gucci, among others.
Although the concept of the Naked dresses has evolved, it still retains its boldness. Take Rihanna, for example, who wore an Adam Selman-designed, all-sheer mesh dress with 20,000 Swarovski crystals and matching opera gloves to the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards. The transparent Naked dress
Not all Naked dresses are sheer, but that only adds to the gorgeous nudity of the look. Wear it with full-coverage panties underneath or show it all off with bare underwear.
