What to Wear to a Black Tie dresses Event
Be the best dressed guest with our ultimate guide to black attire for him, her and the kids
Black tie attire explained
A shiny invitation is outside the door – and the dress code is black tie.
But what exactly does a black tie dresses code mean? What to wear to a black tie and, just as importantly, what not to wear? We are here to help you. Simply put, black tie is a rare opportunity to dress smart.

It is a formal way of dressing for special occasions – perhaps you are lucky enough to be invited to a black wedding, a milestone birthday party, a dinner or an awards ceremony.
Men wear tuxedos or tuxedo jackets with traditional satin lapels and bow ties. Women usually wear long dresses, usually below the knee or floor length, in a fabric suitable for evening wear:
think velvet, silk, satin and lace. Despite the name, a black tie dresses does not necessarily have to be black.
Men can also experiment with tuxedos in other colors:
navy blue and green are popular alternatives to the classic black.
When it comes to what not to wear to a black-tie event, avoid loungewear (the kind you also wear to the office) and dress shirts, shoes and pants should be formal. Anything casual, like sneakers, polo shirts or shorts, is an immediate no-go.
The black dress code for women is more flexible, but short dresses and anything too revealing should be avoided.

Dance the night away in black evening dresses
We’ve got good news:
the black tie dress code is generally broader for women.
That said, it’s a good time to have some fun with your wardrobe and experiment with something new, although we wouldn’t recommend anything shorter than knee-length. If you’re into classics, a floor-length dress always looks suitably elegant for a black-tie event.
We love brands like Ghost London, Gina and Monsoon for elegant and sophisticated black maxi dresses. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to print and color for black dresses, so you can choose from bold florals, jewel tones and statement prints.
However, it’s best to avoid cream, white and ivory if you’re going to a black tie wedding (for obvious reasons) and it’s always a good idea to check the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses beforehand to avoid any embarrassing situations . If dresses aren’t your thing, why not try a smart suit?

Let your inner connection speak in a tuxedo
When you think of black tie,
you probably imagine a man wearing a tuxedo. Certain items are simply non-negotiable when it comes to men’s black tie attire, including a satin jacket, shirt and bow tie. We offer a range of fits for our tuxedos including slim, regular and tailored, so you’re sure to find a style that suits you.
If the event is very formal, it is best to stick to the tried and true color combination of black tuxedo and bow tie, worn with a white shirt. But if you have the opportunity to be a little more playful, you can experiment with different color combinations.
A midnight blue look, like the one pictured above, follows all the rules of black-tie dressing but looks fresh and modern. Accessories can add a touch of personality to your black tie look, like this polka dot pocket square. Shoes should always be stylish: you can’t go wrong with Oxford shoes.
How to dress children for evening wear
There’s nothing cuter than when the kids dress up in their best clothes (even if they inevitably spill something on them within five minutes).
If your black tie invitation is for the whole family, you can follow the same rules as for the adults: longer dresses and smart suits. For the smallest guests, this two-piece outfit with a bow and soft material is comfortable to wear on long evenings.
We love Monsoon for children’s party wear
: this four-piece children’s suit is the perfect choice for black-tie events and the dresses are beautifully designed. You may need to pack some activities or toys in your evening bag to keep her occupied. So take a look at our range of toys here.
