Fishnet dresses are very trendy – here’s how to style them
Sleek, tough and surprisingly versatile, mesh, net and even crocheted dresses are sure to become your go-to summer staple for the beach, town or warehouse.
Mesh, crochet and mesh dresses were almost ubiquitous this past Milan Fashion Week, with even It girls like Doja Cat and Kylie Jenner rocking the trend at events and on social media.
Fun fact:
Fishnet dresses have been around since ancient Egypt, when experts say beaded fishnet dresses were all the rage.
Feeling the hype yet? If you want to jump on the boldest trend in 2023, learn how to style mesh dresses for the modern age, no matter where you are.

When it comes to rocking sheer clothing, the beach is the best place to do it. Mesh dresses are great to combine with your favorite bikinis and wear to the beach.
I know it can seem intimidating to wear a revealing piece of clothing like a mesh dress on the town, but I can tell you that it is totally doable. Full coverage underwear that matches your skin tone exactly gives you a daring nude illusion without actually revealing anything. Otherwise, you can have fun by matching your underwear to the color of your dress or creating a contrast to add some color.
If an all-over dress is still too much for you, try a tighter crochet dress: you’ll get the same summery, carefree look without incorporating too much skin.

Finally, with the right accessories, you can transform your Fishnet dresses from a beach look to a city look. A crocheted bag or hat to match the dress is always nice, and swapping your sandals for a pair of boots will instantly make your outfit more ‘urban’.

Make it your new favorite layer
What happens when summer is over? Don’t let your mesh dresses collect dust in your wardrobe! The mesh dress will become your favorite layering piece for those not-so-warm days. Pair it with a bra top and jeans for an avant-garde look or with an oversized button-down dress or slip dress. Or a matching blazer or jacket will keep you warm even when summer is over.

I will go with you, to marry you.’ So she went and took off everything she had on, and then she was no longer clothed, and she took a large fishing net, sat in it and wrapped it around her, and then she was no longer naked … “
— “The Wise Farmer’s Daughter” Grimm’s Fairy Tales

The farmer’s wise daughter became queen. The origins of this tale, written by the Brothers Grimm over 200 years ago, have been lost in the mists of time. The fishnet inside is no accident, because it covers without hiding, that is, it gives the king the opportunity to judge the curves of his future wife. Many centuries ago, the net was a symbol of female beauty, cunning and also a warning: I will catch you, you will stay with me. And how is it today?
What are fishnet tights?
What do we imagine when we hear about classic fishnet tights? In most cases, the socks are woven in a cross shape, creating diamond-shaped openings. There is a wide variety of fishnet tights that differ in shape, size, color, decor and fabric.
Fishnet tights have established themselves in the collective consciousness as an object of heightened sexuality.Apparently, fishnet tights were destined to gain such a reputation because they remained hidden from prying eyes in the early 20th century Layers and layers of skirts, with the same rights as trousers or a corset. And the hidden arouses more and more interest.
In the 1930s, the fishnet pantyhose’s reputation was partly compromised by the efforts of burlesque diva Gypsy Rose Lee, who wore fishnet pantyhose and bodysuits in her performances. Yet, a decade later, the actresses of Hollywood’s golden age, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and

And how is it today?
A garment with such an attractive geometry and a high emotional level cannot be forgotten. With modern style and the fight for women’s rights, mesh gets new life in the wardrobe. The hidden message of femininity and beauty remained, but a new one emerged: I’m not afraid. I’m not afraid of my femininity, I’m not afraid of my beauty. I may wear a formal jacket, but I’m not mushy! I’m wearing a set of jeans, but I’m not a boy!

Fishnet tights are on the rise

I say it. They take over the streets. But you may have already noticed.
Some people have to get used to it because they think it’s vulgar. I honestly don’t get this because if you wear it right it can add a super edgy touch to your outfit.
In these three outfits you can see how I wear and style them.
Outfit 1:
Wear them under pants when you also wear open-toed shoes. The particularly playful touch is the ‘Bertina’ heels from Dulcie. They also have a mesh print so it almost looks like my tights are falling over the heels.
Outfit 2:
Here I’m wearing a shirt dress (perfect for spring and I love the color blocking stripes).
I wear my fishnet tights underneath. I’m still looking for real ones because #spoiler: I’m actually wearing my favorite socks from Hunkemöller. A nice detail is that the back of my legs has a sexy pattern. I would recommend going for a dressy/casual look, otherwise they can be too sexy. Honestly, it’s all about the right mix and match.

Outfit 3
Here I’m wearing ripped jeans, with the Fishnet dresses and tights looking sheer. I absolutely hate it when my ripped jeans are too ripped and my whole leg is visible. I mean… it should show a little, but not much. So when you wear fishnet underneath, you break the barrier and rock this trend. With a pair of beautiful heels underneath, the look becomes edgy and stylish at the same time.
The history of fishnet stockings is speculative. They say their fame lies in the Moulin Rouge era, but I also found another little story about them:
“The Wise Farmer’s Daughter”. In the story, the king tells a farmer’s daughter that he will marry her if she can solve his riddle. He tells her to “come to me not clothed, not naked, not riding…” and she solves the puzzle by wrapping herself in a fishing net.
